Haulover Beach, which sits just north of Miami Beach, is an ideal location for doing nude shoots. An all-nude beach, Haulover Beach provides all the beauty of the beach and the comfort for the model of being nude without hassle. Well, without much hassle. I’ve done two shoots at Haulover, one at sunrise with Renna , and one with Taylor Rae in the middle of a packed weekend afternoon.
The sunrise shoot went much smoother for a host of reasons. If you’re going to shoot on the beach, the ideal times are either sunrise or sunset; you get perfect natural light at those times of the day. Shooting in the middle of the day under direct sunlight really isn’t ideal because there are just too many issues to deal with: harsh light, squinting, shadows. And, in our case, a packed beach with onlookers. Plus, I really don’t advise taking a DSLR to a packed nude beach. Apart from the sideways glances you’ll get from people, you infringe on the comfort of nude sunbathers, regardless of the fact that you aren’t there to take photos of them. Just not a great idea.
Haulover Beach is great to shoot at, though, beyond simply the nudity aspect. There are enough nice elements on the beach there to allow you to capture different types of shots. Apart from the ocean, there are lifeguard towers and tiki huts to utilize. Additionally, there are the dunes which can work nicely as backdrops and some very cool public showers (which I have yet to use).
Great location for shooting. Just be mindful of when you go.
